Adeline's Fight- Biliary Atresia Survivor (BA Hero Fund)
Our daughter, Adeline Rollins, was born on December 6th, 2016. Soon after birth I noticed something was not right with her diapers, and pushed local medical professionals for further testing. After what seemed like an eternity of pushing and fighting to get all of the needed testing done, she was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia at 6 weeks old. She immediately had her kasai surgery, which ultimately failed after a few months.
The first year of her life we spent in and out of the hospital and before her first birthday, she was in liver failure. She was listed for a transplant on her first birthday, and a few months later we began testing to see if I was a match for my daughter. Thankfully, I was my daughter’s perfect match and we went into surgery on February 20th, 2018. Adeline was only 14 months old.
During our donation and transplant surgeries, I donated roughly 30% of my liver to my daughter. My daughter and I were the first Live Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT) pair at CHOA in almost 4 years.
Since Adeline’s transplant, she has thrived. She learned how to walk, talk, eat and drink again; all things she could not do before she got her new liver. We are forever grateful to CHOA for providing this life saving surgery for our daughter. We will never, in this lifetime, be able to express in words how much the therapists, child life workers, nurses, liver specialists, and transplant surgeons mean to our family.
I have set a personal goal to raise $10,000 for BA Research through Dr. Karpen at CHOA. Raising this amount of money might take me years to complete, but I cannot think of a better way to honor those still fighting biliary atresia, the BA angels gone too soon, and liver transplant recipents like our daughter. Every penny donated to this joint fund BA Hero, created by many passionate CHOA moms, goes directly to help find a cure for biliary atresia.
Thank you for helping me reach my fundraising goal in support of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Your contribution is greatly appreciated and tax deducible.
God bless!
