At least one in five children and adolescents in the U.S. has a behavioral or mental health condition. The number of kids visiting our emergency departments for behavioral or emotional crises has doubled since 2015. In 2023, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta saw more than 54,000 kids in crisis. The median age of these patients: 14 years old. At Children’s, we understand that behavioral and mental health are key to a child’s overall well-being. And we’re committed to addressing the growing demand for services to manage these increasingly common concerns impacting children today. We want to make Georgia a national leader in behavioral and mental healthcare.
We rely on donor support to accelerate our vision for treatment and intervention for kids needing behavioral and mental health care in Georgia.
The ultimate goal for our Behavioral and Mental Health Program is to ensure that all kids have access to a full continuum of care to mitigate risk, and to support mind, brain and behavioral development throughout childhood. Through a holistic, family-centered approach to care, Children’s is striving to lower the rates of depression, anxiety, preventable trauma, and substance use, and working to help more of our kids stay resilient enough to handle life’s ups and downs. Our model of care emphasizes de-fragmentation of care and ownership of the enterprise of mental health, such that every element of the evidence base for resolving a mental health condition or risk is rendered to every child-in-need whom the new investment affords capacity to reach. Our hope is to steadily expand the scope of the program to reach even greater numbers of children and families in need. Our work is funded by generous people like you.
